In this Saturday’s VINTAGES release, we’ve got a special treat in store for you! It’s exactly the same wine the LCBO featured this time last year – yes, it’s THAT good that they bought the same wine again this year! This beauty is an eleven year old red that is drinking beautifully today… if you ever wondered how wine matured once it’s been in bottle for half a dozen years? This is a indeed a fine example!

It’s also under $30.

Read below to see what some others think about this wine… hope this incents you to pick up a bottle, or a case!

Señorío de P.Peciña Rioja Tinto Reserva 2001
This wine was aged for 36 months in used American oak barrels, then further aged in bottle for 8 years. These actually surpass the ageing requirements of a Gran Reserva, so in order to make it really stand out of the crowd, the winery chooses to label it as a Reserva. This is an incredible example of tradtionally-styled Rioja, with lotsof dried cherry, cedar and tobacco notes and flavours, and fine, elegant tannins. Reviews:

“This is in fine shape for a mature Rioja, It is surprisingly light bodied, tender and elegant. Love the balance of fruit and wood in a classic style. Spend time with the fine bouquet with all its vanilla, chestnut, vibrant cedar, currant and menthol. This is very well put together and drinking at prime. Excellent length. Best now to 2014. Tasted November 2011.” (David Lawrason, Wine Align)

“The Hermanos Peciña are about as old school as they come. This is an arch traditional Rioja Reserva, with of course significant wood influence still noted through the spicy, oxidative character. Fruit is dried and red, like dried strawberry and cranberry, while shaved, toasted coconut and melted butter layer on additional complexity. The palate is mid-weight and lively, with tart-balanced acids and light, dusty tannins. Great length. This won’t appeal to everyone, but if you like traditional Spanish reds, don’t miss this. Tasted October 2012. Value Rating: ***” (John Szabo, MS, Wine Align)
