Brancaia Il Blu and Ilatraia

Noble Estates offers two 92 point Super Tuscans.

NOBLE TO YOUR DOOR – BRANCAIA

When I think of Brancaia, I always think of wines that are very well made, clean and balanced. Not to mention very typical of the region they are grown. I visited the estate in April of this year and was amazed at the operation and the beauty of the estate. These two very special wines are in limited supply, so contact me if you’re interested. They both come in 6 packs.

In 1981, Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer fell in love with the abandoned Brancaia estate (Castellina in Chianti) and purchased it. Only two years later, Brancaia made the first rank in an important Chianti Classico tasting and then rapidly gained international recognition.

This lead to a continuous extension of the activities resulting in purchasing the Poppi estate (Radda in Chianti) in 1989, followed in 1998 by the founding of Brancaia in Maremma, only 10km from the Mediterranean coastline.

Since 1998 Barbara Widmer, oenologist and daughter of the founders, has been responsible for the winemaking as well as for the vineyards on all three estates – she thereby relies on the consultancy of the famous oenologist Carlo Ferrini.

Today, the wines of Brancaia are well respected worldwide. Their consistent top scores year after year make them very sought after.

2002 Il Blu – $109.99 – 92 points Wine Spectator

This is Brancaia’s top wine. It has already become a classic with many wine enthusiasts. Made up of 50% Sangiovese 45% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. It spends 20 months in French barriques; 2/3 of it new and the other 1/3 older. It also spends 24 months in bottle before release. The 2002 vintage still shows great length, and is ready to drink now or until 2020. A true gem to have in the cellar!

2005 Ilatraia – $84.99 – 92 points Wine Spectator

The Ilatraia is more of a ‘modern’ Tuscan blend having predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon. Made with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot. It is aged 18 months in French barriques; 1/2 new and 1/2 old. Spends 12 months in the bottle before release. A slightly ‘bigger’ wine than the Il Blu, it is a real Super Tuscan stunner.
