By Le Sommelier, a certified “Good Food Fighter

“Bruno Giacosa continues to make stunning wines of the highest level… it is pretty clear that Giacosa’s finest wines remain relatively well-priced within the context of the world’s finest and most collectible wines.”

– Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

One cannot talk about Italy’s most important producers without including Bruno Giacosa. A living legend, this third-generation winemaker has been making worldclass wine since the 1940s! He has been described as the “Genius of Neive” and his wines have been referred to as the “Romanée-Conti of Piedmont.

Dante Scaglione, Giacosa’s long-time enologist, compares the 2007 & 2008 vintages, “the 2008s are more classic and fresh and will have a longer life. But they’re very young today. The 2007s were more drinkable at the same stage.”

Our annual release has arrived and I am excited that we have secured three fabulous wines! Due to the anticipated response, wines are available on a first come, first served basis. These wines are only available by ordering directly through Le Sommelier, and will not be made available through LCBO Vintages. Wines are shipped in hand-made wooden cases of six bottles. Prices include HST.

Bruno Giacosa, Barbaresco Santo Stefano Albesani di Neive 2008

Tasting Note:

“Medium red. Very ripe strawberry on the expressive, forward nose. Elegant and penetrating, with very good grip to the cherry and strawberry flavors. Not especially fleshy for the year; in fact, this went into a shell in the glass. Finishes with edgy tannins and lovely lift. This suave wine should harmonize with five or six years of cellaring.”

Falletto di Bruno Giacosa, Barbaresco Asili di Barbaresco 2008

Tasting Note:

“Captivating flower perfume lifts aromas of raspberry, menthol and mint. Seamless in texture but a bit youthfully imploded, offering terrific red fruit intensity without weight. Quite spicy for Asili. Nicely balanced, silky, floral Barbaresco, finishing with continuing spice notes as well as serious, building tannins for Asili.”

Falletto di Bruno Giacosa,Barolo di Serralunga d’Alba 2007

Tasting Note:

“The 2007 Barolo Falletto is an overachieving wine, even at this high level. The bouquet has a level of delineation, sweetness, inner perfume and nuance generally only found in Giacosa’s Red Label Riservas. The Falletto impresses for the intensity of its dark fruit and superb overall balance. The extroverted personality of the vintage is quite evident, especially as the wine sits in the glass. Menthol, flowers and licorice add the final notes of complexity on the finish. This is an especially racy Barolo from Bruno Giacosa, but the trademark elegance is there. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2032.”

Antonio Galloni, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Tasting Note:

“Good deep red. Perfumed, complex nose melds plum, red cherry, mocha, tobacco, wild herbs and spices. Sweet, silky and seamless, with almost painful intensity to its fruit if not yet as complex in the mouth as on the nose. Healthy acidity accentuates the wine’s perfume. Finishes with very suave tannins and outstanding floral persistence. Said Dante Scaglione: “I thought 2007 in Serralunga would be great from the moment of the harvest.”
