Located in the Douro region of Portugal, Quinta do Vale Meão is regarded as one of top producers in Portugal, and is part of the “Douro Boys” group.
They aim to uphold the originality and complexity of the wines using a combination of different traditional Douro varietals grown in separate blocks in the vineyards, as well as distinctive styles that are a result of the geological variations of the terroir. The outcome are wines that are layered and balanced that also have the traditional flavours of the region.
2013 Monte Meão Vinha dos Novos – $54.99 – 95 points Jamie Goode
Made with 100% Touriga Nacional, this wine is a true expression of the Terroir of the Douro. It shows real minerality, and its nose is vibrant with violet, spice, pepper and olives. So enticing and fresh on the palate with bright, juicy fruit, spice and good tannins. Vibrant, pepper and tannic with pretty black cherry fruit. Available in a case of 3.
2014 Meandro Red – $24.99 – 91 points Robert Parker
It is a blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Franca, 20% Tinta Roriz, and 10% other grapes. It was aged in well-used French oak (six years) for 13 months. This Meandro is quite fine, particularly for a second label. Rather concentrated, tight and surprisingly powerful in its youth, this also shows some flavor underneath. It will be able to acquire complexity with time.
Finest Reserve Ruby Port – $21.99 – 16.5/20 Revistas de Vinhos
