Le Sommelier brings in J.M. Sohler Riesling Heissenberg 2015.

In this Saturday’s VINTAGES release, LCBO is releasing a delicious single vineyard Riesling from France’s beautiful Alsace – the 2015 JM Sohler Heissenberg Riesling. Producer Jean-Marie Sohler & Hervé holds a dear place in my heart… after visiting the winery on Dec 26, 1999 during one of France’s worst storms in recent history, we tasted the wines in their century-old wine cellar over a period of three hours by candlelight. After that tasting, the dream to have my own wine import business was spawned and Le Sommelier, Wine Agency was born the day after I came home…

I think the write up from the LCBO’s tasting panel does a pretty good job of summing up my own thoughts on this wine, so I’m just going to quote it directly:

Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the minutia of winemaking – the soils, the terroir, the producers’ specific techniques and so on – but every now and again a wine comes along that is just so much fun, these things fade into the background for a moment. This Riesling is such a wine. Loaded with ripe apple, pear and lemony citrus tones with a pure mineral note, it has great structure, length and character. It is expressive and fresh. Quite simply, a fine and fun Riesling. (Vintages panel, May 2016)

Grab a bottle of this delicious wine, and when you do, please let me know – I would love to hear what you think of it.

Sincerely,

Bernard Stramwasser

J.M. Sohler Riesling Heissenberg 2015

Reviews:

”A delicious, mouth-awakening Riesling with vibrant aromas of pear and green apple. Riesling food pairings: salmon, shellfish, vegetarian dishes, light curries.” Score: 90 (Natalie MacLean, nataliemaclean.com, May 2017)

“This is particularly intense and compressed, certainly a factor of the specific lieu-dit, rich, unctuous and full flavoured. The alcohol is moderate but this comes across gassy and warm, driven by some petrol and combustion. It’s young and wild at heart especially at this juncture so let the honey and beeswax develop into a second skin. Drink 2018-2021. Tasted May 2017.” Score: 88 (Michael Godel, WineAlign.com, May 2017)

Varietal: 100% Riesling

Region: Alsace, France

Price: $18.95 (per bottle)

LCBO#: 66126
