February 7, 2013

The Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers, Ontario Chapter, presents Team Canada: Will Predhomme (Ontario) and Veronique Rivest (Quebec – who will also be representing the Americas).  Our team will be competing at the 14th A.S.I. Contest of the Best Sommelier of the World taking place in Tokyo, on 27th, 28th and 29th March 2013. Our delegation to Tokyo also includes coaches and support personnel who will also fulfill our obligations to participate in Association de la Somellerie Internationale (A.S.I) meetings. The candidates and official delegations from over fifty countries are being received in Tokyo on the 26th at the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa, where the quarter-final (27th) and semi-final (28th) are planned. The final, on the 29th afternoon, will gather the best candidates, and will take place at the International Forum in a room for 5,000 people.

Every three years this global competition is held to award the title of Best Sommelier in the World. Predhomme and Rivest will be tested against representatives from over 55 member and observer countries, including the Best Sommeliers of Europe, Americas and Asia-Oceania.  Competitors are tested, in a language other than their mother tongue, on theory, practical and blind tasting skills as a sommelier.

In order to assist the team in their efforts, we are hosting a benefit on Sunday, February 24th at Canoe Restaurant.   We anticipate the wine community to turn out, in record numbers, to support ‘Team Canada’ and the global Sommelier profession. Guests will be afforded the opportunity to meet the principals of top wineries, enjoy cocktails, the finest spirits, wine and craft beer, not to mention terrific entertainment and great networking opportunities. Complementary hors d’oeuvres and appetizers will be prepared by Canoe’s chefs and some of Ontario’s industry suppliers and supporters. Hobnobbing with the who’s who of the Canadian wine world as well contributing to Team Canada’s success at the Sommelier ‘World’s Best Sommelier’ competition awaits our guests. Our goal is to raise funds for our delegates through the effort of this event, which will include a variety of exciting raffle and auction items.
