A man who knows a thing or two about Napa Zinfandel, Dr. J. “Jerry” Bernard Seps of Storybook Mountain Vineyards.

There was a time during my professional career as a Sommelier that I was utterly obsessed with Zinfandel… so much so that I became a card-carrying member of Z.A.P., the Zinfandel Advocates and Producers, making a dedicated pilgrimage to their get-together that occurs annually in San Francisco. It is quite the event, and one that I have returned home to Toronto from with purple-stained teeth, gums, and lips upon many an occasion.

Back then my heroes were Paul Draper (Ridge), Rod Berglund (Joseph Swan), Van Williamson (Edmeades), Jeff Myers (Monteviña), Joel Peterson (Ravenswood), and a certain Dr. J. Bernard Seps (Storybook Mountain).

With this in mind, it was such a great honour to finally meet and then interview the gentleman responsible for the wines of Storybook Mountain (and the founding of Z.A.P.!) when he was visiting Toronto a couple of months back for The Vine Agency‘s Epic Tasting… and he turned out to be quite the character.
