Sonoma-Cutrer Winemaker Michael “Mick” Schroeter at Cafe Boulud.

A permanent fixture on the dinner tables of many a discerning Californian wine drinker, the wines of Sonoma-Cutrer are terrific examples of the unique positioning of the Russian River Valley’s vineyards and what they can bring to the glass.

After a splendid family-style dinner, where I rediscovered my latent love of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir, I managed to convince Winemaker Mick Schroeter to join me for an interview the following morning.

A little bleary-eyed after a late night enjoying the myriad pleasures of the grapes of this particular AVA, I met up with Mick at Toronto’s Cafe Boulud to discover just why the Russian River Valley is so special to him, and why he chose to devote his career to making wine there.
