Woodman Wines & Spirits presents the 2019 Burgundy vintage from Bouchard Père et Fils…
2019: Legends in Waiting
“2019 is a superb vintage … that all Burgundy lovers are going to want to secure for their cellars.” – William Kelley, Wine Advocate
“If the 2018 wines were notable for their (albeit stylish) power and mass, the 2019s bring finesse and elegance to the equation without sacrificing concentration… outstanding balance of intense fruit, firm structure and supple texture.” – Charles Curtis MW, Decanter
“[The] brilliance of 2019’s quality potential, indeed, lies in its combination of density, structure and succulence with that freshness.” – Andrew Jefford, Wine Scholar Guild
Over the past several years, we have noted a few trends in Burgundy: temperatures are rising, and yields are dropping. Via hail or drought, vignerons have had fewer grapes on the vine and thus fewer bottles to allocate. Fortunately, recent experience in managing heat through canopies, along with a few strokes of natural luck have forged a vintage some winemakers have whispered could rival the mythical 1865.
The consensus is that the wines of sunny, bright 2019 are marvellously rich with an unusually poignant spine of acidity. Accessible in youth, but in the best sites, effortlessly ageable. It sounds like a curious contradiction to wield both ripeness and acid. Jancis Robinson offers, “The general theory is that everything, including acidity, was concentrated in the distinctly non-juicy grapes that characterised 2019.”
For Frédéric Weber, Bouchard Père & Fils winemaker, 2019 is a great vintage, “one of my favourites of the last 10 years.” He compares it favourably to 1949, and among recent vintages: reds combine the colour and ripe tannins of 2015 with the delicacy, florality and length of 2017; whites have both the aromatics of 2015 and freshness of 2014.
