André Hueston Mack : An Audience With Mister Mouton Noir

Mouton Noir's Black Sheep, Winemaker André Hueston Mack celebrates a wine at Toronto's Wine Academy.

Mouton Noir’s Black Sheep, Winemaker André Hueston Mack celebrates with some wine at Toronto’s Wine Academy.

From working at McDonalds and Red Lobster, through winning Chaine des Rotisseurs’ Best Young Sommelier In America, to overseeing the wine programs at Thomas Keller’s acclaimed French Laundry and Per Se restaurants, André Hueston Mack has always been at the top of his game. Never one to rest upon his laurels, André has always sought out new challenges, deciding to move into the actual making of wines after so many years curating wine lists.

With his Mouton Noir wine project, this inspirational gentleman appears to have surpassed himself, creating some simply gorgeous wines that are, as they say, eminently “crushable”. And on top of that, did I mention that he’s an incredibly likeable fellow?

We caught up with him on his recent trip to Toronto to talk about his enviable career path and his personal experience of being an African American in an industry that is notorious for being predominantly white.
