We’re pleased to have two new wines launching in the LCBO CLASSICS release this week, from two of our legendary producers: Toscana’s Fattoria Selvapiana, and Styria’s Weingut Sattlerhof (pictured above, with Alex Sattlerhof, in May 2022).

These wines will be available to purchase by the bottle as of 8:30am on Thursday, August 4 by clicking here.

Weingut Sattlerhof Ried Kranachberg GSTK Sauvignon Blanc 2017

Sattlerhof is a leading producer in Austria’s South Styria region, known for their benchmark examples of Styrian Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc. The Sattler family has been growing wine in the village of Gamlitz since 1887, and they were one of the first in the region to bottle high quality dry white wines under their own name in the 1970s. Willi Sattler grew the estate to 40 hectares of organically / biodynamically farmed vines in some of the region’s most famous vineyards including grand crus Kranachberg and Pfarrweingarten, now joined by his two sons Andreas and Alexander. Their vineyards are centered around the village of Gamlitz, located less than 10km from the Slovenian border.

“The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc Ried Kranachberg GSTK opens very clear, with cool, elegant, spicy and finely smoky fruit aromas and a fine cassis tone. Intense, and enormously rich on the palate, with quite a bit of extract and fine yeast lees, this is a dense, full-bodied, juicy Sauvignon of enormous suppleness and density, but also captivating elegance. With the acidity only appearing at the finish, this is a long-distance runner that will possibly live forever. A great, very distinctive Sauvignon Blanc from one of the finest terroirs in South Styria. Drink date: 2021-2050.” 96 points, Stephan Reinhardt, robertparker.com

Fattoria Selvapiana Vigneto Erchi Chianti Rufina Riserva 2017

In Medieval times, Selvapiana was one of the watch towers along the river Sieve built to protect the city of Florence on the North-East border. During the Renaissance, the building was enlarged and transformed into a villa suitable as a summer residence for noble Florentine families, and the bishops of Florence. In 1827, Selvapiana was acquired by Michele Giuntini, a successful banker and ancestor of Francesco Giuntini, the present owner and fifth generation to run the property from 1957 through to 1997. The vines are certified organic.

Winemaker Federico Giuntini grew up at Selvapiana. His father was the estate manager from 1950 to 1990. He always wanted to work at the estate. Francesco Giuntini, owner of Selvapiana, never married, and always considered Federico and his sister like family. In 1994 Francesco legally adopted them, continuing the family tradition at the estate.

“Wow. What glorious aromas of pure fruit with black cherries and currants. Really floral, too. Orange peel and tangerines. Full-bodied with really focused, polished tannins that coat your mouth, yet remain fine and beautiful. Goes on for minutes. Drinkable now, but much better in 2023 when it will have softened and come together.” 95 points, jamessuckling.com
