Le Sommelier presents a rare offer from a legendary winemaker…

Chiara Boschis has an incredible story. In a region where women winemakers are exceptionally rare, she has built a collection of wines that is the envy of many, becoming a full-fledged member of the highly respected Barolo Boys.

E Pira e Figli estate was passed from father to son for centuries, until the late 1980s when Luigi Pira passed away. At that time his sisters felt that they could no longer maintain the estate. Hoping to keep the tradition alive they sold the estate to Chiara Boschis, whose family had long been friends of the Piras.

Chiara now has eleven hectares of vines under cultivation in the communes of Barolo, Serralunga and Monforte d’Alba. She retains the honour of the first female winemaker in the Langhe, an honour she worked hard to achieve back in the 1990s. She is, by necessity, of unquestionable confidence, determination, patience and charm. She ran the estate essentially by herself for twenty years, consistently producing stunning, highly lauded, and ageworthy wines. In 2010, her brother Giorgio, his wife Daniella, and their three daughters joined Chiara at E. Pira, which provided not only a welcome division of labour, but also a next generation of female successors. Beatrice, Elena, and Vittoria Boschis, Giorgio and Daniella’s daughters, are all working in the winery with Chiara.

Hers was the first estate in Cannubi to convert to organic farming, and she has since worked tirelessly over the last few years to convince the rest of the growers in the district to become organic as well.

We are thrilled to have three of Chiara’s masterful and age worthy Baroli from the 2016 vintage available in Ontario right now, with scores from Antonio Galloni ranging from 96 to 100 points. These are in high demand internationally, and we anticipate selling out quickly.

We also have created a special limited edition Mixed Case Chiara Boschis six pack, so you have the opportunity to try all three 2016 Baroli together.

E Pira & Figli de Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi DOCG 2016

“The 2016 Barolo Cannubi is beautifully perfumed and gracious. Sweet red berry, kirsch, mint, tobacco and dried flowers all lift from the glass. A wine of total finesse, the 2016 is just stunning in its beauty and arresting sensuality. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s silkiness and captivating inner perfume. This is such a fabulous expression of Cannubi. What a wine! Drink 2024-2041.” – 98 points (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2020)

E Pira & Figli de Chiara Boschis Barolo Mosconi DOCG 2016

“The 2016 Barolo Mosconi is a gorgeous wine made all the more remarkable given that Mosconi can’t really be said to be a top-level site. Dark and imposing, the 2016 captures all the breadth and tannic clout that are such signatures of this site. This is an especially brooding, virile Barolo, but Chiara and Giorgio Boschis clearly brought out all the best the vineyard had to give. Drink 2024-2041.” – 96 points (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2020)

E Pira & Figli de Chiara Boschis Barolo Via Nuova DOCG 2016

“In my opinion, the 2016 Barolo Via Nuova is the single greatest Barolo Chiara Boschis has made in her storied career. A monumental, thrilling wine, the Via Nuova captures all the best the vintage had to give. Explosive in the glass, with stunning aromatic depth, the 2016 is drop-dead gorgeous from the very first taste. Dark macerated cherry, lavender, spice, menthol and rose petal are kicked up a few notches from underlying veins of acidity and tannin that give the wine its energy and drive. The 2016 is a wine of extraordinary harmony, purity and finesse with an eternal finish. The 2016 Barolo Via Nuova is a blend of seven plots: Terlo, Liste, Paiagallo, Ravera di Monforte, Mosconi, Gabutti and Baudana. Drink 2024-2056.” – 100 points (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Feb 2020)
