Laura Calder took top honours for French Taste: Elegant Everyday Eating at Cuisine Canada’s annual Canadian Cookbook Awards ceremony, held at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, November 5. Asked to comment on her gold medal win for “English Cookbook”, Calder told GFR “It feels especially good to get recognition in Canada and I’m so glad people like the book.”

Other winners included Patrice Demers for La Carte des desserts (best French language cookbook) and Toronto’s David Sax for Save the Deli: In Search of Perfect Pastrami, Crusty Rye and the Heart of the Jewish Delicatessen. Vancouver locavore pioneer John Bishop won a lifetime achievemment award, or “Edna”, named after Canadian cookbook legend Edna Staebler. And Elizabeth Baird won Cuisine Canada’s Founders Award for her lifetime of work encouraging Canadians to eat better.
