Distillery Manager Sean Kaleb shows us around the Demerara Distilley just outside of Georgetown, Guyana.

Earlier this year, courtesy of Woodman Wines and Spirits and Demerara Distillers Limited, I found myself on a terrific excursion to Guyana in order to familiarise myself with the rums of El Dorado.

Being more of a wine (and beer) fellow I’ll admit that the prospect of confining myself to the pleasures of a spirit made from sugar cane for the best part of a week had me more than a little concerned. In hindsight I had nothing to worry myself about… I came away a convert that’s for sure.

Although being somewhat familiar with the rum making process through my studies decades ago, nothing could have prepared me for the rich experiences of that week.
