2017 Santa Julia Magna, Argentina
$15.95 | LCBO# 93799

This year’s Magna is 50% cabernet sauvignon, 40% malbec, and the rest is syrah, all primarily from Vistaflores and La Consulta. 30% of it was barrel-aged, which keeps the fruity side very much in the foreground, and it’s not just any fruit – it’s that fresh, lively, crisp fruit of the new Santa Julia wines, its juicy, refreshing reds. If you want to get to know them, start with this one. Score: 93 (guiadescorchados.cl, 2019)

2017 High Heaven Roaming Elk Red Blend, Washington USA
$19.95 | LCBO# 15847

Opens with a lifted floral note, followed by mixed red and black fruit, vanilla, oak, spice, and a pencil lead minerality. Round and long with great presence and concentration, this calls for steak. (Vintages panel, Nov. 2019)

2018 Joseph Cattin Riesling, Alsace, France
$15.95 | LCBO# 259788

This Riesling is always crafted to reflect a fresh, zesty character. Expect a juicy wine with yellow apple, lemon, peach and white flower tones and a dry finish. It will be a great sipper that would also work well with lightly prepared seafood dishes. Score: Gold (Concours International de Lyon, 2019)

2018 Elderton Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon, South Australia
$24.95 | LCBO# 9175

This is loaded with rich, concentrated Barossa fruit expressed through layers of blackberry, cassis and blueberry, with dark chocolate and spice adding even more complexity. Great balance and depth, and a great value. A wine for grilled or braised meats. (Vintages panel, Feb. 2020)

2017 Vicente Gandia El Miracle by Mariscal Garnacha, Valencia
$17.95 | LCBO# 461418

This Garnacha comes from hand-harvested grapes grown on gobelet-trained 35-year-old vines. It’s crafted in a crowd-pleasing style, with good freshness and balance, notes of cherry, plum, mocha, vanilla and spice, and an underlying suggestion of clove. This will be great with winter stews or roast lamb dinners. (Vintages panel, Feb. 2020)
