Malcolm Jolley talks to Quench wine editor Gurvinder Bhatia in Edmonton…

Gurvinder Bhatia and Karoline Walch at the 2019 Alto Adige Wine Summit in Bolzano last September.

Like the wine trade, wine journalism in Canada is deeply regional. So, it might be ironic but it makes sense, that we tend to fraternize with our colleagues from different parts of the country more abroad than at home. Gurvinder Bhatia, a.k.a Edmonton Wine Guy, is the Wine Editor at Quench Magazine, as well as newspaper columnist and broadcaster, wine consultant, frequent international wine judge and… a consumate wine country traveler, spending months abroad. I’ve got to know Gurvinder a little bit in the last few years when we’ve been on the same press trips, but I have never been in the same room as him in Canada. True to this pattern, I spotted him recently in a Zoom webinar for The Wines of Washington, and it occurred to me that Gurvinder must be taking the prospect of being grounded harder than anyone, so I thought it might be interesting to see how he was doing. As the video below shows, he’s taking it all in stride and, more importantly, taking up the cause of the world’s small wine producers who are so terribly affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
