Le Sommelier 585

In the current CLASSICS online release, we have another very special wine to share with you, this time from Austria. It’s a seven year old, single vineyard Grüner Veltliner from one of Austria’s top producers, Fred Loimer, and from one of Austria’s most famous vineyards for this grape, the Spiegel vineyard.

The 2007 Loimer Spiegel Grüner Veltliner Kamptal DAC Reserve is an outstanding achievement, and has earned incredible scores from several of the world’s most important wine writers. This is Loimer’s most prized vineyard for Grüner; the grapes for this wine were organically farmed (biodynamically, in fact), and hand harvested. The finished product should age gracefully for potentially another decade! One for the cellar, to be sure!

Purchasing wines through Classics can be done either online or by phone. Click HERE for details. Available by the bottle, or by the six pack, there are now less than 10 cases remaining in stock.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Sincerely,

Bernard Stramwasser

Loimer Gruner LCBOTASTING NOTES

Loimer Spiegel Grüner Veltliner Kamptal DAC Reserve 2007

Vineyard description:
Spiegel, a southerly-exposed site at about 250 meters above sea level, stretches just in front of the town of Langenlois, in view of the river Danube. It extends over a vast layer of loess (up to 40 meters), which has a light and sandy surface. Thanks to the deep, well-drained soils, the vines have formed deeply penetrating root systems, thus overcoming even long periods of draught without damage. This site is ideal for growing Grüner Veltliner. The grapes marry so well with the terroir, that they yield highly aromatic, concentrated wines. A massive Grüner with a long life ahead.

Review:
“Medium green-yellow. Attractive aromas of yellow apple, fresh pear, beeswax and meadow blossoms; much more fruity than the bouquet of the Kaferberg. Full-bodied and opulent, offering yellow apple and mango flavors laced with honey. A powerful and muscular wine with a firm acid structure and a pronounced wet rock component. This very long wine exhibits superb potential for further development in bottle. Drink 2010 to 2022.”
