Nicholas Pearce presents the wines of Robert Gilvesy…

A couple weeks ago Robert Gilvesy visited us in Toronto and poured some of his delicious Gilvesy wines for sommeliers and wine lovers. Inevitably we fell in love with every single cuvée he brought, so we prepared this Private Order for you to enjoy them too!

Robert, whose family is originally from Hungary, was born in Canada and grew up on a farm. Since he was a kid, he developed a special sensibility for nature. After some years working as an architect, he found his passion in winemaking, and relocated to his grandparent’s country to start a winery.

Gilvesy winery is situated near Szent György Mount (Mount Saint George), in the western part of the Balaton-Highlands. The area is shaped by 6 million years old volcanoes, where indigenous and international varieties grow organically.

Robert’s absolute admiration for nature and the terroir translates into an immense respect for the environment. By farming using organic practices, the soils and the vines stay healthy. In the winery, by letting nature take its course without controlling the processes, and using local resources, such as Hungarian oak barrels, Gilvesy promotes and protects the Balaton region.

See below for a list of mineral-driven Hungarian wines available to pre-order!

All of Gilvesy wines are certified organic.

Available for Private Order:

2017 Gilvesy BOHEM $18.95
Olaszrizling based Lake blend. It’s not really summer for the Gilvesy team until the arrival of Bohém Cuvée, their estate blend. Robert calls it Lake Blend because it includes the varieties they grow near the Balton lake: Olaszrizling, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. Light, fresh and zesty palate with green apple and citrus fruit.

2018 Sauvignon Blanc $21.95
Zesty, exciting and aromatic. This is what Sauvignon Blanc from the volcanic soils of Szent György Mountain tastes like when it is fermented in steel tanks, a simple vinification that retains the freshness and aromatics of such grape.

2017 Mogyoros Sauvignon Blanc $29.95
Organically cultivated, Mogyorós is a vineyard of the north side of Szent György-hegy, an dormant volcano. From hand-picked fruit, naturally fermented and matured in Hungarian oak barrels, this is a wine expressing mineral and exotic fruit notes with refreshing acidity.

2017 Rajnai Riesling $21.95
The fruit of the Tarányi vineyard is blended with that of the Váradi plot, which also comprises Riesling for the most part. This variety has found an excellent partner in the Szent György Hill, which conveys its elegant and volcanic traits perfectly. It is dominated by flavours of ripe fruits and mineral saltiness.

2018 Martinus Olaszrizling $19.95
This Reisling Italico is a blend fermentated in stainless steel vessels. It was matured over its fine lees and it displays intense varietal character, balanced acidity with little residual sugar which results in a beautiful round finish.

2017 Martinus Merlot $22.95
Merlot from Tagyon Hill’s richly calcareous soils. Pure varietal character, wild strawberry on the palate, with pronounced tannins.

2018 Furmint Skin Contact $39.95
When we thought that Furmint couldn’t get any better, Robert surprised us with an interpretation of this unique grape fermented in contact with the skins. Due to this maceration, the resulting wine has more texture and complexity than its non-contact brother.

Terra Collection is one of Gilvesy’s most interesting projects: two wines made from the same grape, Rajnai Riesling, spontaneously fermented, but from two completely different terroirs.

2018 Terra No.1 – Basalt Volcanic $29.95
Terra No.1 is Rajnai Riesling from the basalt volcanic soils of Mount Saint George, where Riesling finds a terroir that makes it smoother on the palate, with a striking minerality.

2018 Terra No.2 – Dolomite Limestone $29.95
Terra No.2 is Rajnai Riesling cultivated in the dolomite limestone soils of Tagyon Hill. This wine is delicate, pure and elegant. The nose is all about flowery aromas, while the palate has an endless salty sensation.
