NOBLE IN YOUR STORE – SOUTH AFRICA
A few weeks back a group of South African producers came into Toronto to promote their wines. I had the opportunity to meet Ken Forrester and Alex Dale; two icons in the South African Wine industry with a wealth of experience between the two of them.
This week we are presenting wines from their wineries.
2013 Radford Dale Black Rock – 90 points RobertParker.com
A blend of Cinsault, Syrah, Carignan, Grenache and Viognier, the vines which produce this blend are situated along the outcroppings of granite soil in the Swartland. This area is known for its dry, semi-arid conditions, and these bush vines root systems go very deep, as they have to look a long way for water, and plunge up to 10 – 12 meters into the granitic subsoils and bedrock below. On the palate, it has an array of flavours of lavender, strawberries and blueberries.
2015 Vinum Chenin Blanc – 94 points Decanter
The Vinum wines are value driven wines from The Winery of Good Hope from Alex Dale. These bush vines are planted at the foot of the Helderberg mountains in Stellebosch. A portion of the juice is fermented in Burgundian oak barrels, adding a touch of toastiness to the ripe peach, apple and spice aromas and flavours this wine delivers vintage after vintage this is a consistent wine with bright acidity and a mineral finish.
2012 Ken Forrester Renegade – 4.5/5 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
One of the very first Rhone blends to be produced in South Africa, this blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Cinsault is aged in french oak for 18 months. This elegant Rhône blend displays Old World Style with New World fruit. Hint of Grenache’s earthy rusticity and Shiraz’s noble spice with hints of nutmeg and salty black olive on the finish. Balanced with soft integrated tannins. A great match with Duck or barbecued Lamb.
