Montes Purple Angel 2017
+62364 $69.95

With this new vintage, Purple Angel shows a deep, carmine-red colour, typical of Carmenère. The aromas are complex, with pronounced black fruit, like blackberry and ripe blueberry. There is also dried plum, cooked cherry and candied fruit. Its 18 months in French oak gives a complex nose of toasted aromas, nuts, sweet spice and touches of dairy and vanilla. On the palate, the flavours follow on from the aromas, with sensations of dark fruit and dairy well balanced with the toast. It is finely balanced, with good body and a long finish. 92% Carmenere, 8% Petit Verdot

“A cult classic, lush and elegant produced from 92% Caménère and 8% Petit Verdot grapes. Opaque in the glass rich with blackberry, plum, blackcurrant, ripe cherry, bell pepper, thyme, sweet spice and silky dark chocolate. Consistently great, this wine has it all. Pair with filet mignon and date night.” 99 Pts – Natalie MacLean, May 2, 2020

Vina Falernia Syrah Gran Reserva 2016
$16.95 | LCBO# 16793

Bright purple in colour; elegant nose with black pepper and floral notes. It is full bodied, well balanced with very soft tannins, spicy and nice fruit character.

J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
$94.95 |LCBO# 246918

“Dark in the glass, with dense color extending to the rim. The aroma projects red currant and cassis layered with cedar. Firm and medium weight on the midpalate with flavors of black cherry, mocha, and granite.” – Steve Peck, Director of Winemaking.

“After Jerry Lohr’s wife, Carol, passed away due to complications from breast cancer in 2008, Lohr and his children were inspired to partner with the National Breast Cancer Foundation; the resulting program, Touching Lives, promotes efforts around early breast cancer detection. Because the special vineyard this remarkable wine hails from was named for Carol (Lohr acquired the site in 1984), $3 from the sale of every bottle supports the initiative. Winemaker Steve Peck created a stunning, densely textured red with aromas of cigar leaf and black fruit that lead to a sumptuous mouthfeel. Coffee bean, violets, leather, and black cherry engage in a sensuous dance on the palate as slate and creamy plum accentuate its bold lines.” 95 Pts – The Tasting Panel, July/August 2020

Santa Laura Hartwig Edicion de Familia 2017
$27.95 | LCBO# 14147

Deep ruby red with violet tones. Fruity and spicy, with hints of black cherry, blackberries and dark chocolate, with notes of cassis, flowers and graphite. Dry in the mouth with great mid palate. It has silky tannins and a finer texture than its predecessors. 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Malbec, 12% Petit Verdot & 6% Cabernet Franc

Food Pairing: Fine cut of meat.

“Newly picked blackcurrants, bay leaf, wet earth, pine cones and oyster shell, make for a very reserved nose. Finely grained but very structured on the palate, with tannins that both pucker and caress the mouth. There’s good concentration to the center palate and it’s nicely layered. 44 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 38 per cent malbec, 12 per cent petit verdot and six per cent cabernet franc. Drink in 2025.” 94 Pts – James Suckling, December 5, 2019

J. Lohr October Night Chardonnay Arroyo Seco 2018
$34.95 | LCBO# 225375

“This special Chardonnay displays exotic floral aromas of gardenia, yellow rose, orange marmalade, honeysuckle, and baking spices. Traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques, including weekly stirring of the lees in French oak barrels, were used to complement the Musqué clone’s distinctive floral aromatics.” – Kristen Barnhisel, winemaker, white wine

Food Pairing: This wine is the perfect pairing to eggs benedict, crab cakes with creamy orange reduction sauce, cedar plank salmon, or almond-crusted halibut.

“Aromas of orange peel, lemon custard, and vanilla introduce this extroverted white. Within an array of floral tones, toasted coconut merges with lemon tart. Acidity lifts the flavor profile as honeysuckle and gardenia keep things exotic through the finish.” 93 Pts – Meredith May, SOMM Journal, August/September 2020

Cristom Vineyards Pinot Noir WV Mt. Jefferson Cuvee 2017
$57.95 | LCBO# 940882

Made with a blend of grapes from each of the estate vineyards, the Mt. Jefferson Cuvée wine conveys a rich diversity of place, deserving its reputation as one of the most expansive yet stylistically consistent Pinot Noirs in the world.

“An attractive array of rich red to dark cherries that delivers a fine layer of perfume and a wealth of bright raspberries and red cherries. The palate is subtly earthy and gently spicy with a very plush and assertive core of blueberries and red cherries. Smooth, supple and very energetic. Drink over the next six to eight years.” 93 Pts – James Suckling, July 2, 2019

J. Lohr Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
1500ml | $47.95 | LCBO# +16915

“The 2017 J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon is dark and dense in color to the rim of the glass. Layered aromas of black cherry, currant and blueberry are accented by an authentic barrel-aged bouquet of dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and roasted coffee. The palate peaks with high-toned red berry fruit, and follows with bright acidity and a full structure that is both dense and soft at once.” — Steve Peck, red winemaker

Food Pairings: Delicious paired with wild mushroom risotto or an herb-encrusted rack of lamb with creamy polenta.

“This is delicious, very good value, deftly balanced and smooth and mellow from cork pop to last drop. This opens with alluring aromas of black cherry, cassis and notions of sandalwood. It continues to tempt with palate flavours of black currant and black plum, ripe, but not jammy, that are adorned with excellent tang and hints of piquant spice. This is lengthy, balanced and beautiful on the finish and aftertaste. Pour with a prime cut of beef, grilled medium rare.” 92 Pts – Vic Harradine, winecurrent.com, April 29, 2020

Pierre Sparr Gewurztraminer Grande Réserve 2018

It’s colour is intense yellow with light golden highlights. At the nose, a rich and exuberant aromatic palette characterizes this Gewurztraminer. The bouquet is intense and complex, offering an explosion of exotic fruits, flowers (rose, acacia), citrus and spices. Aromas of ripe fruits also contribute to give this wine an impressionable rich nose. On the palate, this Gewurztraminer is a full-bodied wine, with solid structure and a round fullness and some licorice. A wine of full ease and romanticism, at the same time uncomplicated and charismatic.

Food pairing: Aperitif. Exotic fish recipes (sweet-and-sour, spicy…). Asian cuisine. Strong cheeses… try with a Munster Cheese! Desserts.

“Very pretty wine showing white flowers, jasmine, bergamot, honeydew with a zesty freshness.” 92 Pts & Silver – International Wine Challenge 2020

Pierre Sparr Cremant Brut Reserve NV
$18.95 | LCBO# 388603

Light yellow with green reflections and fine, glittering pearl beads. The nose offers aromas of Galia-melon, sweet woodruff and dried mango, with minerals and hints of nuts. The soft sparkling leaves a pleasant feeling on the palate, accompanied by a racy, powerful body and crispy, lemony acidity that brings freshness to this Crémant. With time in the glass, it opens further to a complex sparkling brut, finishing with a long aftertaste. 80% Pinot Blanc, 20% Pinot Auxerrois.

Food pairing: fine little canapés, fresh grilled shellfish, smoked fish. Desserts.

“For the record, a “cremant” (pronounced cray-mon) is a sparkling wine made the same way as French Champagne – by initiating a second fermentation in bottle rather than in large tanks. This method creates a more refined, nuanced wine, which is the case with this dry, Pinot Blanc based bubbly. Each glass exudes a gentle perfume of salted lemon zest before saturating the palate with dense but understated flavours of green mango, wet stones, olive brine and toast. Then it tapers to a long white grapefruit zest finish. Pour this lean, sophisticated tasting wine with mushroom quiche.” 92+ Pts – Carolyn Hammond, The Toronto Star, May 2018

On the palate it shows just how silky a Carmenère can be, together with very good balance, full body, and long finish, where the aromas and flavours remain for a long time.

Food pairing: Highly recommended with mushroom or tomato risotto, lomo saltado (Peruvian stir-fried beef), oven-roasted pork ribs, and pastas.

“This has a gently peppery nose with light notes of dried dark and herbs, together with a core of dark berries and cassis. A flicker of oak spice, too.
