At barely 30 years old, Stéphane Riffault (Claude’s son and now owner of the estate) is turning out Sancerre bottlings that are the envy of many producers twice his age. Regarded as one of the top 5 estates in the Sancerre appellation, these wines are crisp, precise and mineral driven with the terroir of the appellation taking center stage.
Based in the village of Sury-en-Vaux, all 13.5 hectares of vines are certified organic and biodynamic and spread out over 33 different parcels. Unlike most Sancerre producers, the entire harvest is carried out by hand and an extensive sorting takes place before the grapes are deemed acceptable to be included in the first press.
It is clear, after tasting these wines, that you’ve encountered something special – Stéphane is inspired by Sancerre and its terroirs and is influenced by Burgundy and its single-parcel work, both of which make up a wine maker who is clearly propelling Domaine Claude Riffault to new heights with every passing year.
