There’s a beautiful light colour to the wine, but don’t be fooled, there are intense aromatics. Note the smoke on the nose: you get the true volcano notes of Etna. Exotic spice on the palate, layering savoury qualities to the otherwise bright strawberry and cherry, with fine-grained tannins. Volcanic wines are hot right now, just not necessarily in alcohol. This is a stunning example. The primary grape is Nerello Mascalese; if you’ve never tried it, think of it as if Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo had a baby.
Michele Faro and his team have made impressive leaps and bounds in quality – from the stunning historic vineyards, to the immaculately designed gravity-flow winery that is coated with slabs of volcanic stone. It is here that terroir joins art and comes to life. Vines are bush-trained; among them some stunning pre-phylloxera plantings.
Pairings and Tips:
Keep it basic and let the wine be the star: simple preparations of salted meats like charcuterie, cured duck, hard cheese and fig compote, or even simple grilled steak. Serve at cellar temperature and decant to really let it open up.
