Fernando Hidalgo of Emilo Hidalgo Sherry House holds court at Toronto's Bar Raval.

Fernando Hidalgo of Emilo Hidalgo Sherry House holds court at Toronto’s Bar Raval with some of his astonishing wines.

For me, there are sherries, and then there are the sherries that stand way above all others, and the excellent wines of Emilio Hidalgo undoubtedly fall into that superlative latter category.

Imported by our friends (and fellow sherry lovers) over at All The Right Grapes, these Bodegas Emilio Hidalgo sherries are not to be confused with the more prolific Hidalgo La Gitana Manzanillas that you’ll occasionally see in the Canadian market. These gorgeously crafted wines are seriously complex beasts that are highly sought after by those in the know.

At a recent tasting at Toronto’s Bar Raval we recorded an interview with Fernando Hidalgo, who shared with us the story behind his house and just what it is that makes their sherries so special.
