Le Sommelier brings in an acclaimed Rioja to Vintages.

This Saturday’s VINTAGES release marks the return of a wine that every lover of traditional Rioja will love, the 2009 Señorío de P. Peciña Reserva Rioja Tinto from Bodegas Hermanos Peciña. The last time the Reserva was in the market was in 2012, with the 2001 vintage, and it flew out the door. We suspect the same will happen with this vintage…. this beauty is a seven year old red that is drinking like silk today. Ever wondered how wine matures once it’s been aged for over half a dozen years? This is a fine example!

John Szabo, MS describes this wine in his review on WineAlign.com that this is “classic old school Rioja Reserva here, evidently concentrated and thick with ripe, red and lightly dried fruit extract, impressively concentrated.”

What I love about this winery is the incredibly value their wines offer. As Tim Atkin, MW noted in a tweet from Oct 3 of this year, “Incredible value from Hermanos Peciña. Wonderful, traditional Riojas at ludicrously low prices. #2016riojareport” …. I couldn’t agree more.

In the fall of 2015, Tim Atkin, MW, published his first “Rioja Special Report”, and included  Bodegas Hermanos Peciña as a “Third Growth” in his 2015 Rioja Classification.

Read below to see what some others think about this wine… hope it incents you to pick up a bottle, or a case! This is the perfect wine to be enjoyed with friends and family over the holidays!

Sincerely,

Bernard Stramwasser

Bodegas Hermanos Peciña Señorio de P. Peciña Reserva Tinto Rioja 2009

Bodegas Hermanos Peciña is one of Rioja’s traditionalists, set in the premium wine growing area of La Rioja Alta, so expect notes and flavours of dried flowers, tobacco and leather. This wine was aged for 36 months in used American oak barrels, racked six times (once every six months) by the traditional “barrel to barrel” method, thereby achieving a natural decantation. The wine was then bottled unfined and unfiltered, and left to age for a minimum of 18 months in bottle before being released. Now after four years of bottle age, this wine could qualify as a Gran Reserva.

Reviews:

“Ruby with a bright rim. Lively, expansive aromas of red berry preserves, floral pastilles and vanilla, with a smoky mineral overtone. Seamless and sweet on the palate, offering juicy raspberry and cherry flavors sharpened by juicy acidity and a hint of white pepper. Finishes sappy, precise and very long, with smooth, harmonious tannins. This wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in used American oak for three years. Drink 2018-2025.” Score: 93 – Josh Reynolds, vinous.com, Oct. 2015

“Released after three years in barrel, Pedro Peciña’s Reserva is floral, stylish and refined with freshness and balance. There’s plenty of concentration here, but it’s sinewy rather than muscular or broad-shouldered, and underpinned by acidity. Deliciously drinkable. 2015-2020.” Score: 93 – Tim Atkin, MW, Oct. 2015
