2019 Beaumont Family Wines Chenin Blanc, Cape South Coast, South Africa (Alcohol 13%, Residual Sugar 2.3 g/L) Small Winemakers Collection $20.05 (750ml bottle)

If there has been one good thing about this current pandemic it has been that I have had a lot of sample bottles of wine to work my way through (although I am finally coming to the end of them!), and one of my favourite lockdown wines has been this 84% Bot River fruit/16 % Overberg fruit Chenin Blanc from Beaumont Family Wines.

This wines is sold through our good friends at the Small Winemakers Collection, and is a wine that I’d wholeheartedly recommend to assist with your lockdown/isolation/quarantine blues.

Aromatically you’ll find loads of ripe Anjou pear, green apples, and acacia. The palate expresses a delightful purity of fruit, with ripe pineapple/pear and honeyed characteristics interplaying with the texturally brisk acidity of cooler climate Chenin. The wine sees no oak whatsoever, but is fermented in concrete and stainless steel, allowing the freshness and crispness of the fruit to shine right through to the satisfyingly bright finish.

Carefully crafted to present in the glass with admirable purity, finesse, and balance, this one’s a keeper, for sure… or rather, a drinker!

An excellent bottling for truly versatile food pairing; try alongside delicately herb/citrus poached chicken or lakefish.

(Four and a half out of a possible five apples)
