Woodman Wines & Spirits presents a great value Cava for summer…

Vilarnau Cava Brut Reserva NV
$15.95 | LCBO# 515254

The Draw:
Cava, the reliable rock star of the savvy sparkling shopper. Made in the same traditional method of secondary, in-bottle fermentation as Champagne at a song. 50% Macabeo for freshness, 35% Parellada for aromatics, 15% Xarel-lo for power. A brilliant collision of orchard and citrus fruits, rounded out by a modest biscuit character from 15 months of lees aging. And the Gaudi-inspired packaging makes for a show-stopping entrance when entertaining.

The Winery:
Vilarnau is a contraction of the latin, ‘Vila Arnau’: meaning the Arnau family’s ‘country house.’ Members of Spanish nobility settled in this special part of Penedés in the 12th century. Vines date back to this time where the estate was once Castillo de Subirats (Subirats Castle). The first cava labelled Vilarnau was created in 1949, made from grapes that had been grown on the “Can Petit i Les Planes de Vilarnau” estate. These 20 hectares are situated in a beautiful area, with magnificent views of the Montserrat mountains; bordered to the south by the Serralada Litoral (the Coastal Range). To the east the vines are open to the Mediterranean sea just 30 kilometres away. Part of the Gonzalez Byass family of wineries.

Pairings and Tips:
Chill, chill, chill to about 6-8 degrees Celsius. The perfect aperitif that can go with everything or nothing at all. Plays well with light hors d’oeuvres, seafood, snacks, pools, lakes and well-deserved relaxation. It may be a cliché, but take note: you may need more than one bottle.
