Dionysus presents a two great value French wines under $20 at Vintages…

Horizon de Bichot Pinot Noir 2018
$18.95 | LCBO# 18148

Seeking out wines with dense fruitiness as well as structure to allow for longer periods of ageing led Horizon de Bichot to the upper valley terroirs of Limoux for the finesse and freshness of their grapes, which are complemented by grapes from the Mediterranean and Autan terroirs for added intensity and body. Look for the 2018 Horizon de Bichot Pinot Noir at Vintages this weekend.

Produced by Burgundy-based Albert Bichot as a Vin de France, this bright and juicy red is made with pinot noir grown in Limoux in the south of France. The high-elevation hillside sites temper the region’s hot climate, which helps these pinot noir grapes ripen without losing freshness or purity. Bottled with a screwcap and ready to drink, this is a rewarding bistro red. Drink now to 2022.” – Chris Waters (Jan 2020)

Celliers des Dauphins Vinsobres 2017
$19.95 | LCBO# 15448

The lineage of this distinctive vintage stretches back to the Gallo-Roman wines first produced here 2,000 years ago. It is well balanced and offers hints of cherry and blackcurrant, with accents of white pepper. Astute élevage provides roasty scents and a tinge of vanilla.

…This is exactly what you want from Vinsobres: vibrancy and aerial freshness teamed with bright, defined dark berry fruits and delectable, saline tannins. It’s powerful, vivid and remarkably drinkable – a tremendous effort from this producer. Value pick. Drinking window: 2019-2024. Score – 91. (Matt Walls, decanter.com, Oct. 31, 2018)
