Siblings Charlotte Horton & Alexander Greene purchased the 11th century Castello di Potentino in 2000 and have since completed an amazing restoration of the castle and the property. The 4 hectares of low-density vineyards are situated on the slopes of Monte Amiata, the highest peak in Tuscany (and an extinct volcano!). Although the vineyards are farmed organically, Charlotte and Alexander choose to not pursue certification. They even went as far as withdrawing from the local DOC, because they believe these frameworks better serve the purposes of commercial producers, rather than artisans. Charlotte’s wines are intended to “stimulate the intelligence pf the palate.”

“Castello di Potentino’s wines are representative of the delicate relationship between nature and the human, earth and the climate; a symbiosis based on observation and respect, sensibility and discipline.” ~ Winemaker Charlotte Horton

Sacromonte (“Sacred Mountain”) is the flagship wine of the estate and refers to the extinct volcano that rises above the property. 100% Sangiovese fermented in French oak for approximately 14 days and then matured for another 24 months. The wine was aged in bottle for nine months prior to release. This is a handcrafted, elegant wine that shines with a ‘sense of place’ reflecting the valley’s volcanic soils, maritime & alpine climatic influences, and the diverse agricultural heritage that defines this remarkable locale.

2017 Castello di Potentino ‘Sacromonte’
Delicately floral and lightly spiced aromatics. On the palate the wine bursts with exuberant fresh fruit (plums, black cherry), notes of liquorice and dried herbs, and the classic purity of exceptional Sangiovese.

About the Winery

Castello di Potentino is an ancient castle built on an Etruscan site. It lies in a secret valley in one of the last undiscovered corners of Tuscany – Monte Amiata. The medieval building is surrounded by unspoilt countryside, dotted with the vines and the ancient olive trees used for the estate’s small production of high quality wine, grappa and oil.
