New Wines at Vintages

Profile Wine Group presents six new wines to try this week at the LCBO…

J. Lohr Estates South Ridge Syrah 2017
LCBO# 948240 | $24.95

“Varietal aromas of blueberry, lilac, and black tea meld with notes of cocoa powder and tar from one year of barrel aging in a blend of American and French oak barrels. The spice and structure of the Syrah and Mourvèdre red varieties in this blend are lifted by a touch of floral Viognier.” – Steve Peck, director of winemaking.

– 96 Pts & Double Gold – San Francisco International Wine Competition 2019

Food pairing: Pair with a slow-roasted pork shoulder and herbed potatoes. For simple, casual fare, try a classic BLT.

J. Lohr October Night Chardonnay Arroyo Seco 2018
LCBO# 225375 | $34.95

“This special Chardonnay displays exotic floral aromas of gardenia, yellow rose, orange marmalade, honeysuckle, and baking spices. Traditional Burgundian winemaking techniques, including weekly stirring of the lees in French oak barrels, were used to complement the Musqué clone’s distinctive floral aromatics.” – Kristen Barnhisel, winemaker, white wine

“Aromas of orange peel, lemon custard, and vanilla introduce this extroverted white. Within an array of floral tones, toasted coconut merges with lemon tart. Acidity lifts the flavor profile as honeysuckle and gardenia keep things exotic through the finish.” – 93 Pts – Meredith May, SOMM Journal, August/September 2020

Food pairing: This wine is the perfect pairing to eggs benedict, crab cakes with creamy orange reduction sauce, cedar plank salmon, or almond-crusted halibut.

Wakefield Wines Estate Riesling 2019
LCBO# 301523 | $16.95

At release, there is a bright, vibrant clarity to the wine. It has a very pale straw colour and subtle green highlights to the edges. At release, the wine displays lifted fresh and vibrant aromas. Kaffir lime and lemon characters abound, followed by layers of subtle blossom and enticing floral nuances. The wine displays intense citrus fruit characters of fresh lemon and lime along with hints of orange blossom. An apex of tantalizing acid soars in the midpalate, balanced by good fruit presence. The finish is crisp and resonates with citrus fruit – hallmarks of a great Clare Valley Riesling.

“Yellow straw color. Attractive, inviting aromas and flavors of wet stone, yuzu marmalade, pickled ginger, honey, and geranium with a satiny, vibrant, bone-dry light body and a sleek, elegant, long finish manifesting notes of orange zest, hints of anise, and coriander seed with no oak flavor. A fantastic Riesling with beautifully integrated flavors, singing floral high notes and great ageability.” – 92 Pts & Gold, Best Buy, Cellar Selection – Tastings.com, August 4, 2020

It’s flavoursome and mouthfilling on the palate with ripe fruit intensity backed by silky tannins, making it immediately appealing. At its best: now to 2022.” 92 Pts – Sam Kim, wineorbit.co.nz, December 2020
