Woodman Wines & Spirits presents a stunner from Stellenbosch…

Rustenberg John X Merriman 2019
LCBO #707323 | $24.95

The Draw:
Named in honour of the Rustenberg former proprietor (1892), John X Merriman is a dynamite Bordeaux blend that pays homage to the traditions and history of the estate. Blending Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot, there is so much going on in this bottle. Cassis, blackberry and plums are complemented with cigar tobacco and savoury undertones. A real winner for the coming winter months.

The Winery:
Founded in 1682, the Rustenberg Estate encompasses 880 hectares in the shadow of the iconic Simonsberg mountain. The property contains 120 hectares under vine, 200 hectares of farmland for cattle and bees, and the remainder conservation land – some of the most astounding ‘fynbos’ (Cape indigenous flora) to be found. The Barlow family took over the property in 1941 and have upheld its sterling reputation. Currently the winery is helmed by the acclaimed Murray Barlow, who completed his Masters in Oenology 2012, and has been twice awarded “Young Winemaker of the Year” by the Diner’s Club.

Pairings and Tips:
The real challenge with a wine this good is finding the patience to hold onto it. There’s a fair bit of structure on the palate that will certainly reward aging circa 10 years. Since there’s a lot of joy to be had right now though, be sure to decant for at least an hour. Serve alongside larger, heartier dishes – we prefer marbled red meats. The wine is substantial and does need a burly partner to dance with. Enjoy!
