Fabric Dye on handmade Japanese paper! Oil in glass! Ink on plaster!

October will be one of the most exciting months for art  at Closson Chase. Please join us for the opening of Shape Shift and enjoy a sample of our spectacular wine.

Date: Sunday October 5
Time: 1 pm to 4 pm
Featured Artists: Kelly Cade, Cynthia Mcquillan, Jessica Veevers

This show unites a group of artists whose work is process rather than ideas oriented. The resulting physical interaction between the material and artist is baldly evident in each individual work. While the specific medium and shape of each artist’s work is unique, the materiality and experimental nature is cohesive.

Kelly Cade is a Prince Edward County-based artist and graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design. Her work can be found in private and public collections throughout Canada, the United States and the U.K. She is a member of Loop Gallery in Toronto, and her work can be viewed online at www.loopgallery.ca

“This body of work centers on my exploration with yamagampi, a Japanese handmade paper. Yamagampi has its own very distinct characteristics. It is light and delicate and at the same time strong and resilient. I am intrigued by the quiet warmth it emits and by the inherent possibilities present. The forms and textures which emerge suggest a great deal about the essential nature of the paper itself. This work is a process of discovery; an ongoing exploration of the random and the intentional.”

Cynthia Mcquillan is a graduate of Central Technical School – Arts Department, Toronto. She has made the County her home for many years and in that time has shown extensively. Her work can be found in private collections across North America .

“This body of work explores the transparency and illusionary qualities that arise through the compression of paint between glass. Under pressure the paint morphs into unexpected shape, allowing me to surrender to the inevitability of the organic process”

Jessica Veevers is a professional Painting Conservator currently doing a doctorate in Art History at Concordia University. She has worked at the National Gallery, Canadian Conservation Institute, the McCord Gallery in Montreal and for the art collection at McGill University. The focus for her studies is materiality of modern art, particularly Quebequois artist Yves Gaucher. Her art-making practices include printmaking and painting.

“The persistent and permitting qualities of the mediums plaster and ink allow for a symbiotic realization of subject. Formed through a process of addition and subtraction, will and compromise, these medium-driven paintings reflect my interest in shapes, space, and process.”
