Dionysus presents $17 wines from Italy and Australia at Vintages this weekend…

Bollato di Guarini Negroamaro Primitivo 2018
$17.00 | LCBO# 17884

This wine is excellent with first courses with meat sauces, roasted meat, feathered and furred game, aged cheeses, typical dishes from Apulia, barbecued lamb. On the nose: intense, complex, with red fruit notes such as plum, Marasca cherry, blackberry, vanilla with hints of leather, tobacco and a few pleasant balsamic notes. On the palate: warm, mouth filling, long lingering with good tannins that let us appreciate the unique character of the two vine varieties. Look for the Bollato di Guarini Naegroamaro 2018 at Vintages this weekend.

(Translated from the Italian) Negroamaro 70%, Primitivo 30%. Its majestic pulp brings out a minty and balsamic scent in this champion, which presents both warmth and fragrant density. This happens after the eye has noticed its great integrity to oxidation thanks to the purple color not yet fading to orange. Its total consistency and power are obvious from the inability of light to penetrate. Fragrance emanating from the wine evidences the qualifying enological transformation neatness, and the great relationship between the fruit and the spicy oak. The palate is then viscously enveloped by the unfolding of its powerful yet glossy appearance, with a turgid blackberry whose sweetness is always amplified and whose freshness is sustained by persuasive nuances stemming from the vanilla tinge of the oak. A great wine! Among the best Italian reds of this year, accompanied by adaptability to the palate linked to its simply amazing mellow tannin. Score – 97. (lucamaroni.com, June 14, 2019)

The palate is bright with fresh red and blackcurrant characters, dried sage and has soft acidity. Look for the Mountadam Vineyards Five-Fifty Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 at Vintages this weekend.

Wonderfully fruited and inviting, the bouquet shows Black Doris plum, blackcurrant, violet and almond characters with a dried herb complexity. The palate is succulent and plump, displaying excellent weight and fruit intensity, backed by smooth texture and fine, chalky tannins. Beautifully styled and structured with a persistent delectable finish. At its best: now to 2024. Score – 93. (Sam Kim, wineorbit.co.nz, April 2020)
