Woodman Wines & Spirits presents a virtual tasting with winemakers on June 13…

With the success of our first virtual wine tasting a few of weeks ago, we’ve decided to do it again with a trio of outstanding wines and four engaging personalities from the wine world. RSVP to join us Saturday, June 13th at 3PM EST:

  • Luc Bouchard’s roots are deep in Burgundy, going back nine generations to when his family formed Bouchard Père & Fils. This time Luc joins us to talk about Domaine William Fevre in Chablis, an estate he knows well.

  • A winemaker trained in Bordeaux, Ricardo Pérez Palacios worked harvests at Château Margaux, with internships at other Bordelais firms like Moueix (Pétrus, Trotanoy, etc.) before returning home to make some of Spain’s most exciting wines in Bierzo along with his uncle Alvaro Palacios at Descendientes de J. Palacios.

  • Representing Allegrini in Veneto, Carlotta Allegrini is a medical doctor by training, but she inherited from her mother, Marilisa Allegrini, a passion and deep knowledge of her family’s long and important role in Italian wine.

  • David Lawrason has been a wine writer, educator and judge for over 30 years. He’s written on wine for the Globe & Mail, Toronto Life, and he is now a writer and critic with WineAlign.com, Canada’s largest editorial wine site.

We’re happy to have David joining us to moderate the tasting and share his always entertaining insights. Four great people and three terrific wines! Stay connected and have fun.

All of the wines below are easily available in VINTAGES, or we’re also pleased to offer a Virtual Tasting Mixer-Pack. 2-bottles of each wine for only $170. Please order before Wednesday, June 9th to ensure delivery in time for the tasting! Click here to order.

Allegrini La Grola IGT 2016, Veneto

Product

$29.95; Vintages #476598

Look up the red wines of Valpolicella and the description that you’ll read (Amarone versions aside) is that they tend to be “light” and “fruity,” the implication being that they aren’t really “serious” wines. La Grola represents pretty much the exact opposite. It is an intense, elegant, complex wine with a nose redolent of dark plum, graphite, violet, and subtle hint of menthol. Full and ripe on the palate, it offers layers of dark fruit, tar/smoke/mineral notes, and a dash of white pepper. Perfect for red meat off the grill (especially lamb), it would also pair perfectly with wild mushroom risotto and aged, though not overly assertive, cheeses.

On the palate the wine is elegant, fresh and poised with classy, well-integrated oak, flavours of plums and cherries and tight tannins, which will soften in time.” Score – 95. (Decanter World Wine Awards, 2019)

A rich vein of tarry minerality forms a subtle thread enmeshed with the polished tannins and finely knit flavors of black cherry, star anise and rose hip in this creamy, medium- to full-bodied red. Very elegant. Corvina and Oseleta. Best from 2022 through 2028.” Score – 91 (Wine Spectator)

What could be the better partner to the dawn of summer than crisp, minerally, refreshing Chablis? Fèvre is a powerhouse in Chablis with an extraordinary collection of Premiers and Grands Crus, and the Champs Royaux Chablis AOC is the perfect introduction.

Bruce Sanderson of the Wine Spectator, rating it 90 points, writes:
Clean and balanced, this white offers white peach, apple and floral aromas and flavors. A hint of mineral graces the mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2023.

No doubt you’ll recognize its striking label, uniquely painted annually; in this case characterizing the warm, generous 2017 vintage.

Look for luscious aromatics, as well as a rich palate with loads of raspberry, black cherry, blueberry, damson plums and floral tones. A sterling partner for the gamut of fowl, lamb, or hearty, grilled red meats.

Luis Gutierrez of the Wine Advocate, rating it 93 points, writes:
…the wine was really singing and didn’t show any fatigue. The palate was vibrant, with acid strawberry flavors. It is very immediate, approachable, round and juicy… really pleasant and drinkable.
