Mark Davidson hosts a room full of Toronto’s finest at Terroni Summerhill

Just the other week, early on a bitterly cold morning, an invited group of Toronto’s top Sommeliers arrived at Terroni’s Summerhill location for Wine Australia’s day of Sommelier immersion, an intense day of academic study into some of the more interesting wines coming from the vast country that is Australia.

Wine Australia’s Chief Wine Educator Mark Davidson was assisted by Winemakers Iain Rigg (Brokenwood, Hunter Valley) and Matt Fowles (Fowles Wine, Strathbogie Ranges) in leading the group through multiple flights grouped by varietal/blend, and focused upon regional variation.

As the day wrapped up Davidson presented the group with an open ended discussion topic regarding what had been studied over the previous hours:

“Discuss the challenges and opportunities for selling regional Australian wine in Ontario”

Giving the group a few days to gather their thoughts, participants were invited to send their conclusions to Davidson. He would then go on to select the two best entries and they would both be rewarded with an all-expenses-covered trip to the wine regions of Australia later in 2013.

As one would imagine, there was considerable excitement about this great educational opportunity…
