Get it while it lasts… the stellar special edition 2011 Charles Baker “Picone Vineyard” Riesling.

This weekend sees a small LCBO release of Charles Baker‘s delicious 2011 Picone Vineyard Riesling. This special edition bottling has a the vintage stamped in a pink font to indicate that proceeds from the sales of this wine will go towards Toronto’s Princess Margaret Hospital, a place very close to the Baker family’s hearts. We sat down with the man himself to taste through this excellent Ontario Riesling.

2011 Charles Baker “Picone Vineyard” Riesling, Vinemount Ridge VQA, Ontario, Canada – LCBO VINTAGES $35.20
An appealing soft ripe peach, yellow grapefruit, strident stoney minerality, and pulped lime stand out on the nose, exhibiting outstanding varietal and locational typicity.  On the vintage-correct weighty palate one finds an exceptional amount of extract, crisp linear acidity, and undeniable equilibrium, with the 19.5g per litre of residual sugar sitting perfectly with both the 11% alcohol and the pure Riesling fruit character. The 2011 Charles Baker Picone Vineyard was hand harvested from Mark Picone’s two block Weiss Clone 21B plot between the 12th and 15th of October at slightly higher than usual yields of 2.5 tonnes per acre… yields that in the grand scheme of things are still minuscule! Serve with Pan-Seared Kolapore Springs Trout sat atop Peppered Savoy Cabbage. Tasty stuff.
