Introducing New LCBO CLASSICS Release: 2016 Salcheto Vino Nobile ‘Salco’

Salcheto – one of our premiere and most showcased wineries – is likely no stranger to many of you. But just in case, here are a few notes about one of Tuscany’s finest producers.

  • One of 24 ‘Green Emblem’ wineries, a designation awarded to the world’s most sustainable wineries by renowned wine writer, Robert Parker.
  • 50 hectares of organic/biodynamic vineyards producing some of the region’s most awarded wines made from Sangiovese
  • Hand harvesting, sulfite-free vilifications with native yeast ferments.
  • The Vino Nobile region lies geographically between Chianti Classico and Montalcino. These wines remain perplexingly under the radar, providing a tremendous opportunity for Tuscan wine lovers to collect and enjoy world-class offerings at lower prices than their more well known neighbours.

Salco represents the height of Vino Nobile. This is Salcheto’s ‘Cru’ wine, sourced from the winery’s oldest and lowest yielding vines. Winemaker and owner, Michele Manelli, chooses to harvest these vines slightly later than others, allowing for full phenolic ripeness, a richer fruit profile and more weight in the finished wine. Grapes are meticulously sorted by hand and then fed by gravity into the winery’s cellar where they undergo a very slow spontaneous ferment in large, old wooden casks. The wine is aged for 2 years in French barriques (30%) and large, neutral barrels.

‘This features a core ripe of sweet plum, blackberry and spice flavors, accented by earth, wild herbs and tobacco. Though dense and muscular, there’s also a beam of vibrant acidity that keeps this focused and fresh. Best from 2023 through 2042.”

96 Points, Wine Spectator
