The man himself, Mr. Zane Caplansky.

With some notable examples a little north of the downtown core, Toronto had never been serviced very well in the deli/smoked meat department. This was fact that did not go unnoticed by Zane Caplansky, which led him to opening Caplansky’s at the venerable Monarch Tavern on Clinton Street back in 2008. Since that date, and much gushing press coverage, Caplansky’s has relocated to College Street, just north of Kensington Market. Zane and his crew have now snugly settled into these digs and the spot now looks as if it has been a fixture on the strip for many a year.

A rare quiet moment at Caplansky's

The place is invariably packed and Zane is an extremely busy man, and so we were delighted to catch him for chat on a quiet Tuesday afternoon. Over a delicious pint or two of local beer we discussed his journey into the world of the deli, and spoke of his personal philosophies regarding a wide range of subjects…

Caplansky’s Delicatessen is located at 356 College Street and is open from 11am weekdays and 10am weekends

Edinburgh-born/Toronto-based Sommelier, consultant, writer, judge and educator Jamie Drummond is the Director of Programs/Editor of Good Food Revolution… and he truly enjoyed Zane’s amazing hospitality… although he has to admit that the very last closing segment of the interview was unfortunately unusable, hence he doesn’t sign off as per usual.
