Ranger Wine is proud to introduce for the first time in Ontario the wines of Albert Jané’s Autócton Celler.

Albert’s family has been making wine in the Baix Penedès and Alt Camp counties of the Tarragona region since 1914. After making a name for himself in Priorat, in 2007 he returned home to his family estate, the Mas Viella, to make wines from the varietals native to the region north of Tarragona, grapes that had largely fallen out of favour and been displaced by international varietals. His wines consistently receive high point scores and win major international awards. The quality price ratio is off the charts for these fine wines.

AUTÓCTON CELLER

The reds are made entirely with the Sumoll grape, a native of the Penedes region. The grapes are hearty and drought resistant and perfectly suited to the arid soil and high temperatures in the region. The flavour and aromatic profile reflect a pronounced cherry flavour and a distinctive minerality that provides a beautiful balance to the wines. They pair beautifully with dishes like duck confit, fragrant fish stews or roasted vegetables with Haloumi cheese. The reds are aged for 10 months in 300-400 litre large French oak casks prior to bottling.

The whites are made from Xarel-lo, that stands out as one of Spain’s finest white varietals. Often used as a blending in grape in cava, the still whites have a fresh, lemon like acidity, honey tones and stone fruit flavours, think nectarine. Highly food friendly, some excellent pairings would be Vietnamese summer rolls with prawns or parmesan gratinated scallops. The whites are produced, fermented and aged over 10 months with 20% of the wine in large, 300 and 400 litre French oak casks and the remainder in stainless steel tanks.
