Malcolm Jolley finds a bargain at the LCBO…

The Yalumba Y Series Viogner 2019 ($14.95 | LCBO# 470062) is a very well built entry level wine from an old and celebrated Australian house. Sourced from fruit from across the state of South Australia, the wine is a wild ferment made in stainless steel tanks, then left on its lees for the three months. This recipe makes for a more interesting wine than its price point might suggest. On the nose a touch of white flower aromatics, to remind the drinker that what’s in the glass is not Chardonnay. Then, on the palate a purity of stone fruit and citrus notes held together with good acidity and some weight and texture, presumably from the lees. This is not a sweet wine, but there is a honey note in there that makes it suitable as an aperitif, to be drunk on it’s own, or perhaps a salty snack like olives or potato chips. This wine is welcoming and laid back, and a very pleasant prelude to (another) evening of watching a movie at home. At $15 it’s certainly worth a try.
