The wines in this horizontal collection – two bottles each of Barolo di Barolo, Barolo Cannubi, Barolo Sarmassa, all from the 2017 vintage – present an opportunity to compare different single-vineyard and commune-wide Barolos. The Barolo di Barolo boasts a very bright and lifted bouquet that is bursting with energy, thanks to its aromas of wild cherry, crushed rose, white stone and anise. The Barolo Cannubi reveals elegant tones of wild berry, crushed rose, anise, tar, smoke and a spicy touch of licorice. The Barolo Sarmassa delivers a very clear and precise cassis tone, with softer cherry and blackberry at the edges. All three bottlings share the classic structure and elegance of top-tier Barolo.

The Wines

Mosole Discovery Collection
2021 Pinot Grigio – A bouquet and palate of pear and peach with hints of almond.
2021 Chardonnay  Tropical fruit, peach and apple. Well structured and elegant.
2021 Sauvignon – Fresh citrus and tropical notes with tomato leaf accents. A broad, rich palate.
2021 Tai (Friulano) – An aromatic wine with tree fruit, green almond and floral notes.
2021 Ribolla Gialla – A fresh and complex wine with floral notes, apple and lemon leaves. A balanced palate supported by fresh acidity.
2020 Cabernet Franc – Aromas of spice, peppers and fresh herbaceous notes. Full and flavourful.
2020 Merlot – Bright, juicy red fruit balanced by spice and an elegant finish.
2020 Refosco – Aromas of raspberries and wild blackberries. The most structured of the reds with prominent tannins and a long finish.

Torraccia di Presura Lucciolaio Vertical
2006 Lucciolaio
– A winemaker’s vintage. The spring rains ensured an adequate water supply during the temperate summer, leading to a wonderfully balanced wine.
2008 Lucciolaio – The early one. Low rainfall combined with high temperatures and plenty of sunshine led to an early ripening vintage. A plush, ripe expression of Lucciolaio.
2013 Lucciolaio – The late one. A cool and rainy start to the season combined with high diurnal temperature shifts during veraison allowed for delayed ripening, accentuating the aromatic bouquet of the wine.

Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir Collection
2019 Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir
– 94 pts, Virgine Boone for Wine Enthusiast
From a selection of stellar vineyard sites, including Campbell, Morelli Lane and Hallberg, this is an impressive expression of the appellation and vintage, bright and well-integrated in tangy red fruit. Earthy forest and peat notes provide the savory contrast that lasts on the palate, finishing silky smooth.
2018 Fox Den Vineyard Pinot Noir – 94 pts, Virgine Boone for Wine Enthusiast
From a vineyard in Annapolis, this is profoundly cool-climate in its grasp of dried herb and mineral components. Pomegranate, rhubarb and raspberry combine around a complex structure of lightweight yet firm tannins.
2018 Redwood Ridge Pinot Noir – 93 pts, Virgine Boone for Wine Enthusiast
A linear expression of the grape, this wine is textured and mineral-driven. Focused, it offers crunchy red fruit, cinnamon-cola notes and a tang of orange peel, the body balanced in weight and ripeness.

Virna Barolo Collezione
2017 Barolo di Barolo – 92+ pts, Monica Larner for Wine Advocate
The 2017 Barolo del Comune del Barolo is spicy and fruity and ultimately strikes a terrific balance somewhere in between those two points. The wine boasts a very bright and lifted bouquet that is given energy, thanks to its aromas of wild cherry, crushed rose, white stone and anise. To the palate, the wine delivers tight structure and a long staying power.”
2017 Barolo Sarmassa – 94 pts, Monica Larner for Wine Advocate
“With fruit from the heart of the Barolo appellation, the Virna 2017 Barolo Sarmassa opens to a silky, lean appearance and plenty of rich intensity. The bouquet delivers a very clear and precise cassis tone, with softer cherry and blackberry at the edges. This structured wine offers more volume and depth than most wines made in the village of Barolo, and this is one of the special attributes of the Sarmassa vineyard. I would recommend aging this wine a little longer than the others.
2017 Barolo Cannubi – 95 pts, James Suckling
“Extremely aromatic with dried mushrooms, dried flowers, rose stems and sweet strawberries. It’s full-bodied with chewy tannins that provide layers and intensity. Extremely long and powerful. Structured Cannubi. Needs three or four years to come together.
