Clementine and Bastian Baud are the 9th generation managing Domaine Baud in the Jura region of France. They sent us a video in the vineyard where they grow the grape Poulsard, in the outskirts of the Château-Chalon Appellation.
Jura is that narrow valley in the remote hills between Burgundy and Switzerland that, millions of years ago, was covered by an Ocean populated with peculiar cretaceous beings. If you kick a stone in a Jura vineyard, it will probably be a fossil mixed with limestones and marl. They are well known for the production of Vin Jaune and their incredible values in sparkling wines.
If you like Champagne, but not the price tag, then Domaine Baud Cremant du Jura is the wine of choice for you, it is an exceptional value. It can beat your average non-vintage Champagne in a blind tasting, at less than half the price. This sparkler, or Crémant, is made in the traditional Champagne style, where the second fermentation happens inside the bottle, known as méthode Champenoise. It is a Blanc de Blanc, which means it is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes. Also it is a Brut, that means it is dry, not sweet.
This Crémant has a forward nose of apply fruit with citrus, toasted brioche and a striking minerality. It sparks a great balance between creaminess and vivacity.
It is very versatile at the table and you can drink this from appetizers all the way through to dessert: try it with all types of classic cuisine or even spicy Asian dishes, caramelized popcorn or fried chicken!
