Woodman Wines & Spirits presents a unique wine from Campania…

Villa Matilde Stregamora Piedirosso 2018
$18.95  | Vintages 575233

The Draw:
The perfect wine needs no occasion but suits every occasion. Piedirosso means ‘red feet’ – not referring to manual grape stomping, but rather the red stalk of the grape at harvest time that resembles pigeon claws. Aromatically agile, fresh and generous, like pulling up to a big bowl of freshly cut plums and cherries. There are both newly fragrant and dried floral characteristics, with subtle savoury tones of tobacco, spice, and potted earth. Grown at the foot of Roccamonfina, imbuing its distinctive volcanic influence. For fans of Sangiovese, Gamay Noir, and Blaufrankisch.

The Winery:
One must take the longview in understanding Villa Matilde. The estate began in the 1960s when Francesco Paolo Avallone decided to investigate the historical “Vinum Falernum” that was written by the ancient scribes of Pliny and Virgil. He sought out the best oenological support and founded a winery, repropogating ancient varietals in the process. Today, Francesco’s family carries on the tradition while focusing first on quality, but also ecological sustainability, local culture and the desire to express the Campania Felix: “Blessed Campania” of ancient times. It’s a progressive look forward while honouring the past.

Pairings and Tips:
At this time of year, we’re into pasta (either bolognese or puttanesca), smoked ribs from the barbecue, or melanzane alle parmesan. Hearty and warm, but not too heavy for a wine like this. You can go with red or white meats too, and try to include some of those mushroom or olive accents to compliment. Serve slightly chilled and drink now.
