Anne-Laure & Damien Petit of Jura’s Domaine Désiré Petit.

In anticipation of the upcoming Passion Jura tasting in Toronto on Thursday the 17th of April (more details below), we talk with a number of the participating wineries. Here we chat with Winemakers Anne-Laure & Damien Petit of Jura’s Domaine Désiré Petit.

Good Food Revolution: In your mind, what makes the wines of Jura so unique?

Anne-Laure & Damien Petit: Everything!!! First ,the soils that give  (even if it’s a international grape like Chardonnay)  very different aromas; then the climate and the grapes and for sure the people… so friendly and so proud!!

GFR: And how would you describe your winery’s wines? What makes them unique?

AL & D P: We try to make very pure and mineral wines ;we always search to bottle the terroir and each winegrower is a terroir and that makes our wines unique !!

GFR: Would it be fair to say that many wines from the Jura can be difficult for the average wine drinker to appreciate?

AL & D P: no one remember the first chardonnay or shiraz that he taste in his life but the first vin jaune every one remember !! the date, the friends,  the moment ;this wine is unique and like all the unique tastes it take times to appreciate .

GFR: Jura is home to some exciting and interesting grape varietals. Do you have a personal favourite?

AL & D P: Yes , it would be the Ploussard, my village, Pupillin is the world capital. It is a very hard grape to grow, very sensible, and  very difficult in the cellar too for the wine maker ! BUT in the glass, it’s a very soft light red wine full of fruit !!

GFR: Although the region is steeped in history and tradition, what in your mind are the most exciting developments in Jura?

AL & D P: I think ,what the people like in Jura , it’s because there not so much developement ,the region stay very green and the tradition ,the grapes nothing change so much  and it ‘s good  like this.

GFR: Are most of your wines exported or do you sell most of them domestically?

AL & D P: We do 20 % of export and it was 0% five years ago so it going up !!

GFR: Where are the largest markets for you wines?

AL & D P: Canada , England and Belgium are the largest.

GFR: Jura also has a rich culinary heritage. Please tell us about your favourite regional dish?

AL & D P: my favorite dish is a saucisse of morteau cooked in the alambic and fumé of the haut Jura with potatoes and hot cancoillote

GFR: Please tell us about your most memorable, interesting, or unusual food pairing with your wines?

AL & D P: My most memorable was a strong vin jaune with a strong blue cheese (Roquefort) and it was explosive in the mouth ,so amny aromas together !!

GFR: Thank you so much for your time!
