Woodman Wines & Spirits presents a classic Chardonnay from South Africa…

Rustenberg Chardonnay 2019
Vintages 598631
$19.95

The Draw:
A classic barrel-fermented Chardonnay, aged for 10 months in a combination of new and used French oak barrels. Expect ripe, profound aromas of peach, apricot and coconut, leading to flavours of toffee, brioche and lemon. Although viscous and round, there’s a nod to the best European expressions with brisk, fresh acidity. A wine for all guests and seasons, especially the cool months ahead.

The Winery:
Founded in 1682, the Rustenberg Estate encompasses 880 hectares in the shadow of the iconic Simonsberg Mountain. The property contains 120 hectares under vine, 200 hectares of farmland for cattle and bees, and the remainder conservation land – some of the most astounding ‘fynbos’ (Cape indigenous flora) to be found. The Barlow family took over the property in 1941 and have upheld its sterling reputation. Currently the winery is helmed by the acclaimed Murray Barlow, who completed his Masters in Oenology (2012) and has been twice awarded “Young Winemaker of the Year” by the Diner’s Club.

Pairings and Tips:
Comfort food time, let’s get cozy at home. Fish or fowl accented with butter and cheese. Or include some squash, sweet-potato fries or risotto and you’re in great shape. Serve chilled to about 12 degrees and use Burgundy-style stemware. Enjoy now or over the next few years.

And While We Have You…
It’s our pleasure to offer a limited selection:

Rustenberg ‘Five Soldiers’ Chardonnay 2018
$55/bottle, 6-packs only.

Named after the five large stone pine trees on a hill standing sentinel over the Five Soldiers vineyards. It is the apex of Chardonnay at Rustenberg and a highly collected wine.

The 2018 received a ‘Platinum: Best in Show’ award and 97-points in the 2020 Decanter World Wine Awards:

“The fourth Chardonnay in what we feel was a Best-In-Show quartet which perfectly illustrates the astonishing stylistic range of this variety is certainly the most generous and opulent: a white wine which welcomes you with open arms and a warm heart. Is it, therefore, just a little obvious? Not at all. The aromas, in fact, are relatively restrained though they express the warmth of Stellenbosch: fresh lemon cream and a hint of ground hazels. The palate is full-flavoured, with soft and undulating contours yet fresh, tempered acidity; there is a teasingly sweet-edged nuttiness in the finish. Of the quartet, this is the Chardonnay which could most easily be drunk on its own, yet it has all the delicacy and amenability which lighter foods beg for.” Score – 97 (Decanter World Wine Awards)
