Malcolm Jolley talks to Alfons Wimmer from Wieninger and Hajszan Neumann…

Alfonz Wimmer is the export manager for the twin wineries of Wieninger and Hajszan Neumann. Both situated within the Vienna city limits, they grow wine biodynamically and make wine ‘naturally’ under the watch of winemaker Fritz Wieninger. Wimmer was in town recently to conduct tastings with Wieninger’s Ontario agent, Le Sommelier, and it was at their offices that I spoke to him for the video interview below. Before we sat down, I tasted through a number of wines, including an extensive range of Wieninger Gruner Veltliner, that varied inpressively from site and vintage variance, a fascinating naturally made Muskateller (i.e. Muscat) from Hajszan Neumann, and delicious versoin of the Viennese filed blend, Gemischter Satz, from each. I’ll be looking for these labels on fine wine lists in the coming months.
